El fin de semana pasado fuimos todos, mis padres y nosotros a Roma. Antes de que vinieran aquí a España les había preguntado si querían ir a Roma, París u otro sitio, eligieron Roma y así que fuimos. Nunca había pensado en la cantidad de historia y cultura que hay ahí, pero en cada momento había algo que me impresionó, lo pasé tan bien ahí y tengo muchas ganas de ver más de Italia.
Last weekend we went to Rome with my parents. Before they came to Spain, I asked them where they wanted to go, Paris, Rome or another city. They picked Rome, so off we went.
I had never really thought about how much history and culture there was there, but the entire time there was something that wowed me. I am looking forward to going back to Italy at some point
El primer día fuimos al coliseo, aquí se ven mis padres y el coliseo al fondo- no me acuerdo que pasó pero estaban riendo y saqué esta foto en aquel momento. On the first day we went to the Colisseum. I´m not sure why my parents were laughing, but I thought this was a nice picture of them.
EL foro romano, un lugar en el centro de la ciudad donde hay muchas ruinas de la antigua ciudad de los romanos. Aquí se ven las columnas del antiguo templo de saturno. The Roman forum, a place in the city centre where there are a lot of ruins from ancient Rome. Here you can see the pillars of the former Temple of Saturn.

Cuando fuimos a Polonia, los vuelos salieron muy baratos porque fuimos con WizzAir, una linea que tiene vuelos entre Barcelona y las grandes ciudades de Europa del este. Decidimos ir a Lituania por el precio de los vuelos y porque los dos aprendimos mucho de la unión soviética en sociales en el 9º.
When we went to Gdansk in Poland, the flight was quite cheap, so we decided to check out the WizzAir (the cheap airline) website. The flights to Vilnius, Lithuania were very cheap, so we decided to visit a region of the former USSR that we had learned so much about in grade 9 Social Studies.
Aquí se ve una foto de nuestra habitación en el hotel. Fue un tipo de ático con salón, baño y dormitorio. Los dueños del hotel eran una pareja joven y muy amable. Our hotel room- a type of attic with a sittingroom, bathroom and bedroom. The owners of the hotel were a very nice young couple who helped us with a number of things.
Una iglesia ortodoxia que visitamos en la ciudad. Dentro está un retablo muy bonito y los reliquias de tres santos mártires ortodoxos. An orthodox church that we visited in the city Inside there was a beautiful altar and the relics of three martyred saints.
Aquí se ve una parte del mercado central donde se vende cada tipo de cosas. En esta parte se venden carne, sauerkraut y otras conservas. Here is the central market where they were selling all sorts of things. in this part they were selling meats, sauerkraut and other pickled things.
Encontramos la embajada de Canadá allí. We discovered the Canadian Embassy!
Tres platos muy típicos en una cazuela- todos de patata- una salchicha llena de patata, un pancake de patata y dos empanadas con masa de patata y rellenas con carne. Three famous Lithuanian dishes. all made from potato- a potato sausage and pancake and then a potato dumpling filled with meat.
Aquí el plato que comí yo en un restaurante de caza y abajo la carta (en inglés)- yo comí el castor estofado- una experiencia muy candiense...¿o no? Here is a picture of a dish I had in a hunter´s restaurant. Below the menu in English. I ate the Rustic Beaver meat- a very Canadian experience, eh?
La catedral de Vilnius con su torre. Aquí fuimos a asistir a una parte de la misa...más o menos para visitar la catedral- ¡preciosa! The cathedral of Vilnius with its tower. We attended part of a mass here, with the intent of seeing the interior. It was beautiful!
La pequeña comunidad de Trakai donde probamos otra comida típica del país- más empanadas pero de los antiguos judíos que vivían en estas tierras juntos con los cristianos hace mucho tiempo. Abajo se ven las empanadas y la sopa que comimos en el pequeño restaurante.
The small island community of Trakai, where we tried another typical dish of the country- more dumplings, but these were made by jews who inhabited the area for a long time, along with the christians living there. Below you can see the dumplings and the soup we ate in the small restaurant.

El fin de semana pasado fuimos a Madrid, alquilamos un coche y fuimos a Castilla y León. Como hice el Máster allí quería regresar a ver unos amigos y visitar la tierra que fue gran parte de mi formación profesional .

Cada año la Escola Banús tiene un concierto de Navidad en la iglesia al lado.
Todos los alumnos tuvieron que aprender una canción en inglés y otra en catalán. Las cantaron muy bien todos, y al final como una sorpresa especial cantamos nosotros, los profesores, una canción que se llamaba ¨Navidad Rock¨. Me verás arriba a la izquierda, también verás que alrededor de 1.20 caigo del escenario. Each year the school here in Barcelona has a Christmas Concert in the church next door. The students all had to learn a Christmas song in English. They did an excellent job for the most part, and as a special surprise the teachers all sang a song called Navidad Rock- set to Jingle Bell Rock. Below is the video of us performing. I am in the top left corner.
Cuando volvimos a España pasamos unos días en el piso nuevo, pero queríamos aprovechar del tiempo libre y decidimos viajar unos días a Polonia. Como tomé una clase de polaco en la universidad- sólo un semestre hace ya muchos años... pero podía pedir comida y hablar con los conductores de los autobuses, incluso que al final hablé un ratico con el conductor del taxi que nos llevó al aeropuerto.
When we got to Spain and had set up the apartment a little, we wanted to take advantage of the free time we had. We got some cheap tickets to Poland and since I had taken one semester of Polish we decided on Gdansk- a port on the Baltic Sea.

We ran into a choir beside the basilica where they sang and celbrated the feast of the 3 Kings.
Aquí se ve el río y el gran teatro- donde fuimos a ver un espectáculo de baile y música irlandés...en Polonia. No llamó mucho la atención cuando, después de la primera canción, hablaban en polaco....

Después de un día muy ocupado fuimos al centro comercial- donde dormí una siesta en la cafetería.
After a very busy day- we went to go shopping at a mall and I fell asleep in the caferia. :)
Al día final antes de que nos marchásemos fuimos a una fiesta en una plaza. Allí comimos una sopa que prepararon unos soldatos que se ven en la tienda. La comida nos costó sólo 1€.
The last day before we left we went to a festival in a square. While there we ate some soup that was preparded by some soldiers. The meal cost us 1 euro!
Montserrat es una montaña, un monasterio y una cantante catalana. Aunque no conozco mucho catalán creo que significa una montaña serrada.
Hace unos días, fui a ver el monte y el monasterio. Hice el viaje en tren con una amiga que estuvo aquí en Barcelona unos días.
Cogimos el tren en Plaça Espanya y una horita después llegamos a la parada de Montserrat para hacer el trasbordo y continuar el viaje en la cremallera. Montserrat es a mountain, a monastery as well as a catalonian singer. Although I dont know much Catalan I think it must mean serrated mountain- as in jagged like a breadknife. A few days ago I went there to see the mountain and the monastery. I made the trip with a friend who was visiting Barcelona for a few days. We got the train in Plaça Espanya and an hour later arrived at the Montserrat stop, to make the transfer into the ¨zipper¨ that took us up to the top.

La Fira de Santa Llúcia
Aquí se ve el Cagatió- un tronco que caga turrón y dulces. Tambien se ve el caganer en el cartel en el fondo. ¡Vaya tradiciones que tienen los Catalanes!
La Feria de Santa Lucia es un mercado con cosas para la Navidad. Aquí se puede comprar todo lo que es parte del pesebre. Here- above you can see the Cagatió and the Caganer. The Cagatió is a log that poops out candies and sweets at Christmas time. Also on the poster at the back is the caganer- a pooping shepherd boy. The St Lucia fair is a market where you can buy all sorts of Christmas things- mostly everything for a nativity scene- to build your own at home.
